Check out this GIFtionary for Earth Science Vocabulary

Mr. Gruszka’s Earth Science GIFtionary

Here is a variation of a dictionary to help students understand the meaning of essential academic vocabulary.

Why is it great for students who are struggling to read on grade level? Academic vocabulary is a lever for reading comprehension. So let’s get kids to think about and remember the meaning of words in your discipline. Challenge students to examine the Giftionary for the most memorable gifs. Then test students to see if the five most memorable gifs are remembered by 90% of the students two weeks after view the Giftionary. If not, then what would make the gifs more memorable? Create criteria and try again, until students discover what helps them remember words. Invite students to create gifs for vocabulary words and test students to see if the gifs are memorable and help students remember the meanings of important vocabulary words.
