To engage all learners, within every unit and/or weekly classroom routine there needs to be planned time for individuals and small groups to practice targeted skills. Teachers assume that all students would not progress at a standard rate, therefore, targeted practice during class (not just after school or during lunch/recess) is an obvious requirement so that students can practice, review, and extend skills on a regular routine basis.
Pictures of Practice
Mastery Monday provides an opportunity for high school students in Living Environment science class to repeat an activity from the previous week or a previous unit. Students review their work from the week and identify an assignment that they would benefit from repeating. Then on Mondays the first 15 minutes is spent on practicing a previous task and reflecting on their learning.
In the Pre-Kindergarten at St. Paul’s School in Sao Paulo, Brazil, we worked with the teachers to support their development of mastery oriented individualized practice. Here is information about Flag Time.
